Luis Barros


Luis Barros, is the Founder and CEO of LB Ventures, a boutique consultancy specializing in Venture Strategy, Acceleration, and Business Development. His affiliations and collaborations include serving as a Venture Partner of Portugal Ventures, an $800M Venture Capital|Private Equity Firm based in Lisbon, Portugal; appointment as Co-Director of Industry and Innovation of the MIT’s Portugal Program (MPP), a large scale initiative for capacity-building in higher education science, technology, innovation and venture creation – supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT); and Principal Advisor|Expert Resource role with the USA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Programs.

As an investor, Luis had successive roles on teams that architected and implemented sustainable and award-winning venture fund entities, both as Senior Vice-President of Investments at the Governor of Massachusetts’ $1B Life Sciences Center and as Principal at Eli Lilly Ventures (NYSE: LLY). His operations experiences includes serving as Executive Vice-President at IC Sciences, where he served as President of Endovascular Forum, and management roles with venture-backed co’s respectively acquired by Microsoft (NYSE: MSFT) and TIBCO (Nasdaq: TIBX).

Luis also was on the compliance team at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and started his career in sales and marketing, including Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ). He has degrees from MIT Sloan (MBA) and UMASS Amherst (BBA).

Legal Counsel: José M. Padilla, Founder and Principal, Padilla Law PLLC
José M. Padilla is the founder and principal of Padilla Law PLLC. He represents technology and growth companies, investors, and venture capital funds in a broad range of corporate and transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions, financings, as well as general corporate and securities law matters. He also has extensive experience with healthcare and gaming regulations. He is one-of-a-kind because his career has given him experience to last lifetimes. He has literally been all over the world (over 60 countries and counting), meeting his wife in the middle of Siberia. He speaks five languages and has danced salsa on six continents. He has negotiated on behalf of billion dollar companies and on behalf of an unemployed individual about to lose his home. He has worked at top thousand lawyer law firms, billion dollar companies, and for startups with a few employees. He has taught gaming law at Las Vegas’ law school, and currently teaches health law at NYU. The son of immigrants, he was the first in his family to finish high school and loves to continue learning from those around him.


CFO & Head of Accounting: Rick Herlihy, Consulting Director, Stowe & Degon LLC,
Rick Herlihy is a seasoned executive with over 10 years of public accounting experience and 15 years in industry including roles of CFO, COO, and VP of Operations. Rick began his career with one of the largest international accounting firms and has financial, operational, audit, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance experience in the insurance, medical, manufacturing, high technology, and distribution industries. Rick also has hands-on experience with multi-state sales and use tax compliance with a broad range of businesses. He has identified significant tax savings while performing reverse sales and use tax audits, transactional analysis and planning, audit representation and appeals, and settlement negotiations.


Events, Branding and Communications: Lisa Murray, Brand Strategy, Content Marketing, and Public Relations, Trevi Communications
Lisa Murray is co-founder and principal of Trevi. A logophile and news junkie, Lisa enjoys untwisting complex concepts into straightforward, simple messages that sell. With over 25 years of experience, Lisa specializes in creating and promoting sustainable brands for executives, experts, and entrepreneurs. She develops marketing communications campaigns for an array of professional service firms, with a special focus on the legal industry. Her strategic PR counsel has helped clients to build brand awareness, raise capital, launch new products and services, enter new markets, avoid/withstand PR crises, and prepare for divestitures and acquisitions. Prior to Trevi, Lisa was the Director of Marketing Communications for international law firm Brown Rudnick LLP, and before that, served as a senior executive at two of the top New England PR firms. Outside the office, Lisa loves spending quality time with her husband and their fur babies – Lady, the Husky/Shepherd mix, Cookie, the Tabby cat, and Brady, the Morgan horse. If you can’t reach her by phone or text, you can likely find her at the gym (not often) or at the barn (too often).


Product Design & Development: Anthony Coston, Head of Medical Devices, Draper
Anthony Coston is the Head of Medical Devices at Draper where he oversees the Medical Device Business within Draper's Commercial Division. His daily New Business Development (NBD) activities involve determining how to leverage internal technologies and capabilities and deploy them against significant unmet needs within the Medical Device Marketplace through collaborations and partnerships with Commercial companies. Anthony's portfolio of available technologies and capabilities includes Neurotechnology, Mental Health, Diagnostics & Therapeutics, Data Analytics, and Image Processing. Anthony holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware, a in Biomedical Engineering from Penn State University, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University and MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management.


Valuation Partner: Maurice Matteodo, Managing Director, Ice Glen Associates, LLC
Maurice Matteodo, Managing Director of Ice Glen Associates, LLC, has more than 30 years of business experience and has held senior positions with venture-backed start-ups as well as Fortune 500 companies. Maury possesses extensive experience in all phases of business operations, including strategic and financial planning, financial reporting, international finance, operations analysis, manufacturing, project management, treasury operations, cash management, fundraising, and systems. Since founding Ice Glen in 2005, Maury Matteodo has provided executive-level financial support to dozens of venture-backed technology companies. His practice includes providing part-time CFO services to early-stage technology companies, as well as project-based work that includes pre-investment due diligence for venture capital firms, audit preparation for early-stage companies, and transactional advisory services. Maury has prepared several hundred independent business valuations to help companies meet requirements under IRC Section 409A and GAAP and has also done numerous purchase price allocations and valuations of goodwill and intangibles under ASC 805 (formerly SFAS 141(R)) and ASC 350 (formerly SFAS 142) ). Mr. Matteodo’s clients include companies in various sectors, including internet services, software, hardware, life science, and material science. He has worked with a significant number of companies with international operations, including many that have undergone Delaware Flips. Prior to founding Ice Glen Associates, Maury held CFO positions with Salesnet, an on-demand CRM provider, and Nemonix, a manufacturer of accelerators and memory products. Maury also served as CFO of JPS Elastomerics, a diversified manufacturer of industrial products. Mr. Matteodo began his career with General Electric and is a graduate of GE’s Financial Management Program. Maurice Matteodo is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College with a B.A. in economics. He also holds an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Chicago.

Strategic Consulting: Pat, Shafer, Managing Director, Health Solutions, FTI Consulting
Patterson Shafer is responsible for delivering services, solutions and thought leadership for pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device clients. He has over 30 years of experience solving complex global challenges and helping clients achieve their strategic and operational objectives in the areas of regulatory affairs and operations, quality, compliance, clinical operations, safety and surveillance, manufacturing, supply chain, medical affairs and commercial compliance. Mr. Shafer has worked around the world to assist clients in the development and execution of strategies that promote innovation and growth, speed to market, operational efficiency, process excellence, and sustained regulatory compliance. He has worked extensively with global, top 5 companies to optimize performance as well as pre-revenue and emerging life sciences companies to build core capabilities and achieve launch readiness. He works regularly with Private Equity and M&A teams to support pre-deal regulatory, quality and compliance due diligence as well as post-merger integration. Mr. Shafer's domestic and international regulatory experience includes developing new product regulatory strategies, health authority interactions, submissions/approvals, labeling compliance, 483/Warning Letter/Consent Decree response and remediation program development and execution. He is internationally recognized for his subject matter knowledge and experience concerning regulatory, quality and safety capabilities. He works frequently at the intersection of business and technology, designing and implementing regulatory and quality systems, including eQMS, Regulatory Information Management (RIM), Regulatory Intelligence and AI/machine learning. Mr. Shafer is a strategic advisor to the FDA, having assisted them in various areas, including product quality, patient safety, and digital health. For several years, he has been co-leading collaboration efforts among the FDA, the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC), and the medical device industry as part of the FDA’s Case for Quality, including defining quality metrics, identifying leading practices for quality management review, and developing a playbook of leading practices for quality and corporate leadership. He is also the RIM Whitepaper team and Reference model co-lead as part of the Drug Information Association’s (DIA) RIM Reference Model initiative. He is frequently published and quoted in industry forums. Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Shafer served in leadership roles at Grant Thornton and Deloitte Consulting. He started his career in communications and interactive learning, supporting professional development in the areas of finance, ethics and compliance, contract management and quality, and partnered with Juran Institute to create GM’s Quality College.
